Tomato Semiya Upma (Indian noodles upma)

Tomato semiya upma ~ is a famous south Indian breakfast! Serve it with sambar, chutney, or just eat it by itself. 

** Tomato semiya upma **

Preparation time: 10 mins 

Cooking time: 15 mins 


Semiya – 1 cup

Tomato – 1 (large, diced) 

Green chillies – 4 (finely chopped)

Salt to taste

** Water – 3 cups of boiling hot water (this makes the cooking easier and faster) ** Caution when adding hot water into skillet, please use the necessary kitchen accessories while handling. 

Ghee (optional) – 1/2 table spoon

For seasoning:

Mustard  – 1/2 table spoon

Chana dal – 1/2 table spoon

Black gram – 1/2 table spoon

Dried red chillies – 2

Oil – 3 table spoons


1) In a heated skillet, add oil and the seasonings; let them pop. Now diced tomatoes and cook for 2 mins till they become soft and mushy.

2) Add semiya to this and fry until it turns golden brown. 

2) Add 3 cups of boiling water into skillet, green chillies, and salt to taste; stir the semiya and let it cook for 8 mins. 

Upma is ready to eat! Enjoy…
